The low-tox bathroom.

The bathroom holds the easiest swap on the whole list — and the one place I'm most careful to be clear about what "clean" means versus "disinfect." Three changes, and one bottle carries most of them.

3 swaps · start with one
01

Antibacterial hand soap

This is the easiest swap on the list, and it comes straight from a regulator — no health claim from me required. In 2016 the FDA removed triclosan and 18 other active ingredients from consumer antibacterial soaps because manufacturers didn't show they were safe for long-term daily use or any better than plain soap and water.

Look for instead: a plain, plant-based hand soap. No "antibacterial" active ingredient needed.

How strong is the evidence? The firmest kind — a direct FDA regulatory action. I don't have to add a single claim of my own.

02

Tub, tile & scrubbing

Bleach is a recognized respiratory and eye irritant. A 2020 meta-analysis — the strongest single piece of evidence in the whole guide — and a 2007 study in children both found regular bleach and disinfectant cleaning was associated with more respiratory symptoms. Associations, not proof, but enough that I keep bleach out of my daily routine to cut the harsh fumes.

Look for instead: a plant-based daily cleaner for routine surfaces, and a plant-based scouring scrub for the tough jobs. For occasional whitening or grout, low-tox folks reach for hydrogen peroxide (any pharmacy bottle — not a Young Living product).

Important: a plant-based cleaner is not a registered disinfectant — it doesn't replace bleach for true disinfection. It replaces it for everyday cleaning.
03

Disinfecting wipes

Disinfecting wipes are usually quat-based (benzalkonium chloride and friends) — EPA-registered antimicrobial pesticides, and that same emerging concern. Here's how I think about it: for everyday surfaces I use a plant-based wipe. For the rare moment I actually need to disinfect, I reach for one clearly labeled, registered product and use it sparingly — instead of wiping residue across the whole bathroom every day.

Look for instead: a plant-based wipe for daily wiping, and keep a single labeled, EPA-registered disinfectant on hand for genuine need.

Crystal clear: a plant-based wipe cleans — it does not "kill germs" or disinfect, and I'd never tell you it does. Both jobs matter; they're just different jobs.
