Dish soap
That word "fragrance" on a bottle is a legally protected umbrella term — it can stand in for dozens of ingredients a company never has to name. Phthalates like DEP are commonly used as fragrance carriers, and a 2024 meta-analysis of ~29,000 people found one phthalate (DEHP) was associated with altered reproductive hormones. That's an association, not proof for any one person — but DEHP is on California's Prop 65 list.
Look for instead: "fragrance-free," or a scent that names its source (a specific essential oil), and plant-based surfactants — a label that discloses what's in it.
How strong is the evidence? Mixed but honest — the phthalate–hormone link is a real peer-reviewed association, and the Prop 65 listing for DEHP is a hard regulatory fact.
